Unique Handmade Marquetry Boxes by Kevin Stamper

Square Boxes

Small Hinged Wooden Boxes

Square boxes are generally larger and feature either a lift-off lid or a hinged lid. As these small hinged wooden boxes are bigger they have more flexibility for the type of items stored inside. They can also contain a removable cross grid divider to keep items separated - only available on the bigger 24cm boxes.

They are either 12cm long x 12cm wide x 5cm high or 24cm long x 24cm wide x 9cm high. The smaller boxes are made from solid wood whilst the larger wooden hinged boxes are made with veneered sides to prevent the box twisting and not closing properly. All the boxes have a decorative marquetry top which are made in hand-dyed sycamore unique to Kevin Stamper Furniture and not available from anyone else. The tops and bottoms are lined with brightly coloured faux suede fabric to give a soft landing to what ever goes in, and the sides of the smaller boxes are lined with thin layers of solid wood to create a friction hold for the lid.

The bigger boxes are fitted with brass barrel or ‘Zysa’ hinges that fit neatly into 10mm holes drilled in the lid and base and are completely invisible when the box is closed. They make a perfect small wooden box for a gift.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • The boxes are meticulously sanded to give an even, crisp finish and then sprayed with five coats of polyurethane lacquer. This lacquer gives a wonderfully clear and tactile finish whilst still allowing the nature of the wood used to come through. The lacquer is very hard wearing and does not need any further treatment other than the occasional dust with a soft cloth. It’s best not to use furniture polish that contains silicon as it may leave streaks on the surface of the lacquer - if you do get some streaks, these can easily be removed by further rubbing with a soft cloth. If the box needs a deeper clean, then use a silicon free spray polish such as Method Wood Polish which will return the box to a smooth satin finish.

  • The polyurethane lacquer used to finish the box is very clear and will not ‘yellow’ with age as other finishes tend to. It also contains an added anti-yellowing agent and an ultraviolet filter that helps stops the sun’s rays reaching the coloured veneers. In addition, the dyes used to colour the veneers are ‘light-fast’ and formulated to resist the fading effect of sunlight. Despite all of these precautions, it is still recomended that the boxes are not exposed to strong sunlight on a regular basis as the power of the sun will fade anything over time.

  • Yes. All of the wood and veneers are purchased from reliable suppliers and are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). Larger boxes are sometimes made from veneered MDF to prevent any distortions occurring due to timber movement, but the MDF is also FSC certified and formaldehyde free.

  • Marquetry is a decorative art technique that involves creating intricate patterns and images by inlaying pieces of wood veneer, and sometimes other materials like metal, ivory, or shell, into a surface—typically furniture or paneling. Each piece is carefully cut and fitted together like a puzzle to form elaborate designs, ranging from geometric motifs to detailed scenes. Originating in the 16th century and popularized in Europe during the Baroque and Rococo periods, marquetry showcases exceptional craftsmanship and precision, blending both artistic expression and fine woodworking. evin uses a range of techniques to create his marquetry designs, including cutting by hand with a veneer saw and scalpel, cutting on a scroll saw, repeat cutting using shaping jigs and laser cutting.

  • Because the boxes are all handmade, most dents and scratches can be removed and repaired if the box is returned to Kevin. There will be a charge for this service unfortunately, but most times the box will be remade like new. Please don’t try to repair the box yourself, it generally makes the damage worse and more difficult to repair.

  • Boxes are available from a range of shops and galleries throughout the UK, and directly from this website. Great care has been taken to select shops and galleries with a matching ethos and high quality level to Kevin’s work so that his boxes sit happily amongst work from other makers who match his desire to make the finest possible work. The boxes are priced the same wherever you buy them from, whether it’s direct from the website, in London or Birmingham.

  • The boxes are priced depending on their size and the complexity of the marquetry design on the top. For example, the Tray and Cube style boxes are sold at two price points, £108.00 and £132.00, which reflects the time it takes to make the marquetry designs on the top. It takes a long time to make these little boxes, but the prices are kept as low as possible so that they offer very good value for an entirely handmade object.
